CHAPTER 12
The weekend had gone by quicker than Kaiya expected. Saturday, she had taken care of everything she needed to, and Romaine spent the day helping her fix up her bedroom. It was bigger than Kaiya thought it would be and even had a separate bathroom. It was a two-floor brownstone, apartment-like space. Kaiya always thought when Romaine said she lived downstairs that it was an actual apartment, but it was really like a house that was inside of an apartment building. Kaiya gave Romaine $2,000 as a down payment for three months’ rent and they agreed she could take on the electricity and help with groceries and that would be enough. Kaiya was excited.
Her car was registered, she had insurance and she had slammed her audition as well as finalized all her paperwork at the Sephora in SoHo. This Sephora was open seven days a week, from 10 am to midnight. She would work from noon to 10 pm, Saturdays and Sundays. She knew the days would be long, but ten-hour shifts would make it easier to keep twenty hours and focus on school during the week. She still needed to focus on finals and last minute projects. She vowed to find an early morning church service on Sundays and told them she couldn’t work before noon. She knew that she would need God more than ever out there in New York by herself. The twenty hours would keep her in the field and give her the experience she needed, but not take too much time away from her handling her responsibilities.
She even looked into some beauty schools out in New York that she could attend to obtain her 600-hour license and get into the esthetics field. Romaine was proud of her. She thought Kaiya was way more responsible than she had been at eighteen. Romaine had taken her to eat at Justin’s and they had done a little shopping. When Kaiya finally got home, it was 11:30 Saturday night. She still had to finish packing. She had been trying to do so since Thursday night, but her mother kept knocking on her door, interrupting her and asking dumb questions. It was like she was trying to make conversation although she knew Kaiya was still pissed about the letter.
Sunday morning they all went to church as a family. Kaiya’s father had promised he would go and she wanted to spend as much time with them as possible. Although her mother pissed her off a lot, she would miss her cooking, her warm smile and her overprotective nature. Her being overprotective was a little too late, but Kaiya understood that she was trying to make up for what she hadn’t done when Kaiya was little. Kaiya just wanted peace and she wanted to get past everything. She felt this was the best thing to do.
Later that night, after they ate out at the Moshulu, she packed the rest of her things. She would wait until her mother was sound asleep to leave.
